The Democratic Republic of the Congo is home to Virunga National Park. With a total area of 8,090 square kilometers, the national park shares the Virunga Conservation Area with Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. In 1925, it was designated as a national park and given the name Albert National Park in honor of Belgian King Albert I. Once the county gained independence from the Belgian colonial authority in 1960, it was designated Virunga National Park later in 1969.

The name of the national park is sometimes spelled “Parc National des Virunga” in French. It is home to 22 primate species, including mountain gorillas, as well as 218 mammal species, 706 bird species, 109 reptile species, and 78 amphibian species.

Day 1: Pick up from Kigali and Transfer to Virunga National Park.

Take advantage of your hotel’s early breakfast service in Kigali City. Your safari guide from Experience Rwanda Tours will pick you up from your hotel and drive you via the Gisenyi-Goma border at “Le Grand Barrier” to Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is crucial that you arrive at the border as early as 9am because the check-in process at the Goma frontier might take up to two hours. You will drive to Goma town after crossing the border in Goma, where a team from Virunga National Park will pick you up and take you to the national park.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Virunga National Park.

This is the day you’ve been looking forward to on the second day of your three-day Congo gorilla trekking safari! Get up early, eat breakfast, and then head to the park’s administrative center. Your guide will drive you to either the Mikeno or Bukima tourist centers, where all gorilla trekking activities start, depending on which gorilla group you want to monitor.

Similar to Rwanda, you will receive a briefing before being divided into groups of no more than eight gorillas each at the Virunga National Park. Armed park guards, knowledgeable guides, and porters, should you choose to hire one, will accompany you. In Virunga National Park, there are 8 habituated mountain gorilla groups that visitors can track.

Virunga’s gorilla trekking excursions last between two and four hours, including the hour spent with the gorillas once they have been found. Any adult can participate in gorilla trekking activities in Virunga National Park because they don’t require a lot of strenuous hiking activities. Return to your hotel for lunch and some downtime.

For guests staying at Mikeno lodge, you have the option to embark on a cultural excursion to one of the nearby village villages or visit the Senkwekwe gorilla orphanage later in the afternoon. After dinner, return to your lodge to spend the night.

Day 3: Transfer back to Kigali.

The three-day gorilla trekking safari comes to a conclusion on this day, which we hope was spectacular. You will travel back to Kigali, Rwanda, after a leisurely breakfast. Depending on the time of your departure flight, you may choose to have a half-day tour of the city. You will see some incredible cultural and historical locations in Kigali during your city trip, including the Kigali Genocide Memorial Center, Camp Kigali, Nyamirambo Women’s Center, and Caplaki Craft Village, where you may buy gifts for friends and family back home.
