Karisimbi / Susa (B) Mountain Gorilla family : The Karisimbi Gorilla Family is led by a Silverback by the name of Nyagakangaga. They dwell on the slopes of Mount Karisimbi, which is the highest peak in the Virunga Volcanoes.

2009 marked the beginning of this group’s independence from the Susa Gorilla Group (Susa A). Susa A, the largest mountain gorilla group at the time with approximately 42 individuals, was reduced in size to approximately 26 members as a result of their harsh separation from one another, with the exception of their Silverbacks.

Nyagakangaga, along with thirteen of its other members, disbanded and moved to a remote location in order to establish their own mountain gorilla family. The band was known as Susa B when they first formed, but in 2010 they decided to change their name to Karisimbi. The lower slopes of Mount Karisimbi are a common destination for this group.

When Karisimbi first got together, there were 15 people in it, but unfortunately, some of those people have already moved on to other bands. This group now consists of 11 individuals; there are two infants, four silverbacks, and one black back among them.

Rwanda is home to several families of gorillas.

My experience has led me to believe that the Karisimbi Gorilla Group is one of the most challenging to explore. As a place of safety, the group found themselves in a crater on Mount Karisimbi. It is possible that locating them may take up to a day, and in the extremely unlikely event that they move to a far higher elevation, it will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to do so. But, you shouldn’t be concerned about this because park rangers are trained to swiftly discover the family and tell other rangers to their precise location. This will spare other rangers from having to make a long walk to find the family.

If you are looking for something that will test your level of physical fitness, you should put this group of mountain gorillas at the top of your priority list. Finding them can be a physically demanding endeavor that might wear you out, especially if it’s not one of those wonderful days when they get noticeably closer to you.

We will reserve your permits for a gorilla trek to this family if you let us know in advance when you book one of our Rwanda gorilla safaris at an affordable fee.
